Unlink a layer from its mask

Place two images on different layers of a Photoshop document. Switch to the top layer and create a layer mask. Paint an area of arbitrary shape on the mask. Unlink the layer from its mask clicking over the link icon in the Layers palette. Select the Move tool and move the layer mask. Undo the action pressing Ctrl+Z, and move the image. Watch the effect.
