Remove the layer mask and make changas permanent

Place two images on different layers of a Photoshop document. Switch to the top layer and create a layer mask. Paint an area of arbitrary shape on the mask. Delete layer mask dragging it to the Trash button at the bottom of the Layers palette. Click Apply in the dialog window. Watch the effect.
