Set size for equation elements

The size of a symbol can be changed to any of the standard sizes, or it can be set manually for a specific symbol, set of symbols or a template symbol. In equation editor, symbol size depends on its role in the equation. For example, if it is a subscript or exponent symbol.
Each field in the equation has a particular size. So, when you type in a symbol, it takes the size of the field. On the other hand, when a template is inserted into another one, the text size in the new template depends on the text size in the field where the new template was inserted. For example, when an integral template is insertes into a subscript/superscript-sizes field, the integrand in the new template will be subscript/superscript-sized, the limits of integral will be sub-subscript/superscript-sized.
Note: thought templates can be inserted into one-another, the field size cannot be less than sub-subscript/superscript.
To set a standard size, select the element and choose the right item in the Size menu: Full, Subscript /superscript, Sub-subscript / superscript, Symbol, Sub-symbol(see table 3).

Standard sizes of equation elements
Size
Description
Full
Is assigned to regular symbols in most fields
Subscript/
superscript
Is used for subscripts and superscripts associated with full-sized symbols. Also used for limits in integral, summation and other templates
Sub-subscript/ superscript
Is used for subscripts and superscripts associated with subscript/superscript-sized symbols, and in other situations that require second level of downsizing. Also used for limit fields in templates inside other templates. For example, for superscript in a limit of integral
Symbol
Is used for symbols being parts of integral, summation, product and other templates.
Sub-symbol
Is used for template symbols in subscript/superscript-sized fields.

Besides that, using the Size|Other menu item you can directly define the element size.
